Start with the performance objective

Detention temporarily stores runoff and controls its release; retention keeps a permanent pool or removes runoff through processes such as infiltration. Many projects need a hybrid. Choose the concept from the governing peak-rate, runoff-volume, water- quality, safety, and maintenance criteria—not from the label alone.

Preliminary design workflow

  1. Confirm design events, allowable releases, volume and water-quality objectives, and downstream constraints.
  2. Screen site soils, groundwater, topography, land take, discharge point, and maintenance access.
  3. Develop existing- and proposed-condition inflow hydrographs for every required event.
  4. Build stage-storage and stage-discharge relationships for the basin and all outlet components.
  5. Route each hydrograph, iterate the storage/outlets, then check the auxiliary spillway and exceedance route.
  6. Document inspection, sediment removal, blockage response, safe access, and long-term ownership.

  • Approved inflow hydrographs and target release rates
  • Surveyed stage-area or stage-storage data
  • Outlet geometry, elevations, tailwater, and blockage assumptions
  • Maximum acceptable water levels, freeboard, drawdown, and emergency conditions
