Drainage Calculation FAQs

How do you calculate drainage?

The most common method is the Rational Method, Q = CiA, where peak runoff (Q) equals the runoff coefficient (C) times rainfall intensity (i) times drainage area (A). Larger sites use the SCS Curve Number method to estimate runoff volume.

Read the Rational Method guide →

What size drain pipe do I need?

Pipe size depends on the flow rate, pipe slope and material roughness. Enter your design flow and slope into a Manning's equation solver and it returns the minimum diameter that carries the flow without surcharging.

Size a storm drain pipe →

How much fall does a drain need?

A common minimum for gravity drains is roughly 1% (about 1 unit of fall per 100 of run), though the exact grade depends on pipe size, flow and local code. Use the fall calculator to convert between slope, gradient and total fall over your run.
